April 2017 – May 2017

Tourists are comming to the Ambrim island not see Rom dances or play drums, but for lava lakes.

There are 3 tracks on the volcano – north, west and east. I also saw descriptions of the north-western, which led almost to Craig Cove, but now there is no such path.

The most popular routes are from west to east with arrival to Craig Cove and departure from Ulei, and reversed.

Our route, from north to west, is not so popular, as it is possible to get to Ranon only by boat, the option is not cheap and unreliable. But you can see .

From the village of Ranon to the beginning of the track above the village of Ranvetlam we had a price 4500vuv, though in the official price was 3500vuv, it was reasoned by the fact that now you can drive a little further.

But half an hour after we agreed and said that leaving at 5 am, the tree fell sharply on the road, though the storm was 2 weeks ago) of course we did not see any fallen tree along the way. For 2 hours, as written on the map, northern camp can only be reached if you are taken to the beginning of the way by track.

In the village Ranvetlam we were met to take money and impose a guide … The entrance to the volcano is 1000vuv per person, a guide for one day 4000vuv.

According to the rules for such route we had, our guide should hold us to the top, and there give us to another guide, but the second part was not so important for these guys as these are not their money.

It is worth saying, that the northern track to the edge of the caldera is quite obvious, but on the lava fields and on the way to the crater Marum traces of the trail are visible not at all, but having a gps track it is possible to go there without a guide, but this will require a little more time and effort.

north camp,lava fields,crater,volcano,Ambrym, Vanuatu

In the volcano caldera there are 3 camps – north, east and west. In the camps there are some sheds and a tank with rainwater.

Usually from Ranon it takes 1 day to the north camp and spend the night there.

Our plans were to go to the edge of both craters and go down to the west camp, but it was too optimistic.

Though the maximum plan was not carried out at all, we went through the northern camp, climbed to the edge of the Marum crater and descended to the western camp, leaving Benbow the crater the next day, and this despite heavy backpacks and high temperature.

Even the guides were surprised that it is possible to do in one day.

Though in the camps there is rainwater, we did not rely on it, but carried the necessary quantity with us.

Rainwater in barrels is not always suitable for drinking, because of the proximity of the volcano, rains are often acidic.

The road to the edge of the crater was exhausting, but it’s worth it!

The volcano Ambrim has 2 craters active Marum and Benbow, and in both lava lakes can be observed.

There are not many places in the world where you can observe the lake of boiling lava – Hawaii, Nicaragua, Ethiopia, Congo, Antarctica and Vanuatu.

The spectacle is fascinating.

The sounds of the lake are somewhat reminding of the sounds of falling ocean waves during a huge storm.

If during the ascent it was simply unreal hot, then at the crater edge it is cool enough.

The wind is strong enough.

The crater is huge, the temperature on the edge of the crater is not increased.

boiling lava,lava, lava lake,crater edge,marum,crater,volcano,Ambrym, Vanuatu

The walls of the crater are very steep and it is impossible to descend closer to this lake.

At this moment there are two ways to see this miracle of nature: the first – to come here by foot through the jungle and lava fields, the second – to fly over the volcano on the plane.

Having tried both these options, I can say that walking is beyond competition – only so it is possible to stay on the edge of the crater, to pass through perennial layers of ash, to hear the noise of a seething lava and to feel the wind. Though of course “walk” here is not a simple thing.

From the plane of the lake you can see badly (but when you fly up to the volcano you can see the whole view.

I do not understand why the helicopter excursions with the landing on the volcano have not yet been made, in order to combine the advantages of both options.

Managed to fly a bit with a drone, a small bright turquoise dot – it’s me)

Flying over the volcano is not a simple task, the main difficulty is a very strong wind. Many drones were buried in volcanoes.

In this photo, if you look closely, you can also see me on the right part of the crater edge.

Making photos from a small tripod on the edge of the crater is unpleasant – a strong wind carries volcanic ash and slag pieces. But carrying a full size tripod here would be even difficult.

Our guide went back, and we met a guide with two Frenchmen. This guide did not imposed, and not requiring money advised to go to the Benbow crater next day with them, spend the night in a west camp.

The path between the crater Marum and the western camp was easily losting, even though we had a gps track.

Pass here in principle, you can almost everywhere, following the path is more a matter of time and convenience.

lava fields,clouds,crater,volcano,Ambrym, Vanuatu

From the crater, clouds of steam and gas are rising.

gas,lava fields,clouds,crater,volcano,Ambrym, Vanuatu

Everywhere you can smell sulfur, but the concentration here is already small.

 gas,lava fields,clouds,crater,volcano,Ambrym, Vanuatu

The direction of the wind pleases us and we do not actually breathing with a gas.

The caldera of Ambrim volcano occupies an area of about 100 sq. km.

Caldera is deserted and most of it is lava fields.

The edges of the craters of Benbow and Marum reach an altitude of 1300 meters above the sea level.

We came to the west camp almost in the darkness.

The camp is located near the edge of the caldera, where already there is some vegetation.

way to west camp, lava fields, clouds, crater, volcano,Ambrym, Vanuatu

In the camp there are two houses, a canopy for a fire and one tent, a tank for rainwater and a toilet)

In addition to our guide and two Frenchmen, there was another group – we also saw them, flew together on the plane.

The day was hard, exhausting, but impressive!

Tomorrow crater Benbow is waiting for us.

Hotel:
We lived in a tent and there is no need to pay for it here)
Moves:
The official price for moving Ranon-Ranvelam is 1500vuv. Ranon-volcano departure – 3500vuv. But we were said 4500vuv and then lazy and did not do it even for this price.
The entrance to the volcano is 1000vuv per person.
A guide for the day 4000vuv. Guide Edwin Da – did not strain, but did not help. The promised fruits did not tear. I can not say that I would advise him.
